Benjamin Sebastian, A Revolutionary War solider built a water - powered grist mill and sawmill at Falls of Rough in 1813. Mr. Sebastian was a prominent political figure serving as a judge on the first Kentucky Supreme Court from 1772 to 1806. In 1829 Sebastian sold the property to Willis Green, who served two terms in Congress. Today the Green farm is known as LaFayette Golf Resort, the Falls at the farm is where the name "Falls of Rough" came from.

The oldest metal bowstring arch bridge in Kentucky is located at Green farm. The falls, post office, general store and mill are still in place for viewing.

In the beginning…Rough River Lake was a creek. Old timers like Melvin Galloway would call it Rough Creek. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers received permission to start a flood control project in November of 1955. The completion of the Rough River Dam and the filled reservoir became operational in June of 1961. Rough Creek had been renamed to Rough River.

What started out as a flood control project to help agriculture has now turned into a multi million dollar tourist industry in the infancy stage. With tourism becoming an industry in our society the growth of the Rough River area is still virtually untouched. This industry could be “watered” into a blossoming revenue tree with untouchable roots given the proper nourishment from state and local governments. The increasing revenues from properties being built and sold should be enough to cause the keen eye of foresight to take notice. Rough River is a 5100 acre recreational lake which now draws millions of dollars to our State Park Resort and the businesses surrounding the Park area.

Those of us in private industry see the potential of development and know the importance of serving the ones who patronize us. Our State Park continues to receive budget cuts that in turn hurt the local economy. The wise business entrepreneurs like Tammy and Mike at the Pine Tree Inn have worked non stop to promote the area and thus build a substantial business for themselves and consequently surrounding businesses have also reaped the economic benefit.

Rough River State Park has a 1.9 million visitation to the area per year. While you are visiting us, please take the time to leave your suggestions for area growth and improvement in a nice letter to our Congressional and Senate Representatives. Perhaps with the increased awareness and the efforts of all concerned with growing Kentucky’s natural resources we can maximize this area’s potential.
